We were a few drinks into the evening when a guy in his late 20s approached Faye. His face was tense with anger, and he looked on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

He had brown shaggy hair that fell into his face, brown eyes, a narrow face, and wore skinny jeans. He looked like he played in a band or hung around the scene. I couldn't tell which. He shouted at Faye, “I’ve been trying to get hold of you."

Faye twisted her head and lifted a salty eyebrow. "If I would have wanted to talk to you, I would have picked up the phone during one of your 27 calls."

His jaw tensed, and his eyes flicked to us for a moment, then back to Faye. I could tell he wanted to speak with her alone.

“Can I have a word with you in private?”

"No. You can't. Your private time with me is over." She spun around to face Crash and continued our conversation.

That only served to infuriate the dude. His face reddened. "Goddammit, Faye. Talk to me!"

That was about the time JD stepped in. He got in the dude's face. "I think it's pretty clear she doesn’t want to speak with you. Take your skinny ass out of here."

The kid’s face twisted up, and he stared JD down. He snarled, “Fuck you, old man!”

Then the kid made the mistake of his life. His open palms smacked against JD's chest, shoving him back.

I guess it caught JD off guard, or maybe the little bastard had more force behind his push than I thought possible because JD tumbled back a few steps.

The guys in the band looked shocked.

JD’s face reddened. He was ready to charge the little runt like a bull.

I stepped in, held JD back, and flashed my badge. "Look, dipshit. You need to get out of here before you go down for assaulting an officer.”

He threw his hands in the air, “He’s a cop? How was I supposed to know that?”

"Well, now you do. So, get lost."

He gnashed his teeth and stared at me for a moment, then looked at Faye. “I just want to talk to you for a minute."

"Leave, now,” I insisted.

The punk’s mouth tensed. He huffed and puffed, then backed off, raising his hands in the air. “Fine, I'm going.”

He glared at us for a moment, then spun around and disappeared into the crowd.

I kept an eye on him as he walked around the pool and slipped back inside. I put my badge back in my pocket and turned to JD. His face was still a little red.

"That little prick’s lucky he won't be eating his next meal through a straw."

An amused smile tugged at Faye’s full lips. "I guess there are a few perks to having two cops around."

"Ex-boyfriend?" JD asked.

"We all make mistakes,” Faye said.

We couldn’t argue with that.

She lifted her glass to toast. "To bad decisions."

We all clinked glasses.

Faye brought the drink to her lips and tilted it back, draining the last of the amber liquid.
